I had the opportunity to speak to the Social Media Club of Kansas City during the March 2019 monthly breakfast. My presentation, “Keys to Success for Highly Regulated Industries,” provided an overview of highly regulated industries, social media best practices, and tools and resources for innovating in regulated spaces.
It was an honor to be named SMCKC’s 2019 Trailblazer of the Year and present in March!
I’ve included some of the highlights below.

Excited to speak about social media and innovation in highly regulated industries at #SMCKC!
Background on Highly Regulated Industries:
- They tend to be highly personal (finance, healthcare, education, etc.)
- Marketers can offer lots of value through social media by providing info, answering questions, and connecting communities
- There are extra barriers for social in highly regulated industries, including major consequences if done poorly
Highly regulated fields are usually very personal–a great fit for social media.#smckc pic.twitter.com/kvRSlih7XA

Regulated doesn’t mean impersonal. You can speak like a person, to a person, while remaining compliant. #smckc pic.twitter.com/pMKJV0vsRT

Social Media Best Practices for Regulated Industries:
1. Get stakeholder buy-in early and partner to develop content workflows
2. Control the social messaging for your content, leveraging social metadata
3. Evolve with social platforms to stay up-to-date on trends that impact compliance (and just as important, memes)
Pro Tip #1 @andrewgrojean Get stakeholders involved early!!! #smckc pic.twitter.com/hozrkxW9wX

Process is key to ensure compliance on #socialmedia. Get stakeholders involved early on. Below are a few examples.
1. Build workflows to ensure exposure to stakeholders at the right time.
2. Have well-established guidelines.
3. Create “Block lists”. #smckc pic.twitter.com/m4Nu1vr5or

It’s critical to be up to date on social platform changes. All it takes is one platform update to make you non-compliant in your industry. #smckc pic.twitter.com/Ny93l9LiQ6

Social metadata (Open Graph) is the heart of social. Be aware of what your webpages pull through on social platforms. #smckc pic.twitter.com/uBQxsTfmEQ

Just cause you’re in a regulated industry doesn’t mean you can’t be innovative. But you do have to stay in compliance. Stay up on platform changes, pay attention to social metadata (open graph) & use (or create) the right tools to make planning & posting easier. #smckc pic.twitter.com/vzd3tA7uUW

Challenging traditions can be a liberating innovative best practice. Don’t let “we can’t do that” stop your creativity. @smckc @andrewgrojean #smckc pic.twitter.com/Y5y0aRBnA3
